53. In today’s diary, I enter this number alone because I covered 53 kilometres on the longest day of the expedition up to this point.

There was no chance of stopping halfway, not even a small beach on which to rest and catch my breath. I arrived in Katwa , a city of 70,000 inhabitants, about an hour after darkness fell.

Totem, my fixer, Bury, my guide, and Mauro, my photographer, were waiting for me at the entrance to the city on the river bank. When I threw them the mooring line, we all breathed a sigh of relief. It was a very tough day but completing it brought great satisfaction. We are 120km from Kolkata.
